EC to file SLP against Madras HC order

New Delhi, Apr 5 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) today decided to file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against Madras High Court's order on transfer of Chennai Police Commissioner R Natraj.

EC sources said the petition will be filed shortly.

While maintaining that the EC has powers to transfer a police official after the publication of election notification, the Madras High Court had last week advised the state government to take appropriate action on the issue in consultation with the Commission.

The EC had sought the transfer of Police Commissioner for praising Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa after the model code of conduct had come into force following the March 1 announcement of assembly elections in four states and a union territory.
