Ahmedabad, Apr 5 (UNI) In an attempt to placate traders agitating against Value Added Tax (VAT), Gujarat Government tonight announced that no trader would be penalised till April 30, in case they default on any count.

In a statement issued here, Commissioner of Commercial Taxes M M Shrivastava said that no penalty would be levied nor any penal action taken against any trader for his failure to comply with any condition in implementation of VAT Rules in Gujarat.

He said, ''The government is committed to explain all provisions of VAT to all traders and trade organisations, be they small or big.

The government has an open mind for discussion on any issue related to VAT.'' ''They could drop in at Sales-Tax (ST) offices in their respective area to understand or get clear any doubts. The department is also open to hold seminars and conferences and officers willing to impart guidelines to them.'' The department has also arranged for the distribution of a booklet on VAT published by the state government from S-T offices.
