Actor-Director Bhagyaraj joins DMK
Chennai, Apr 5 (UNI) Noted actor-director K Bhagyaraj, whose venture into politics in the late 1980s turned out to be a jailure, today joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the presence of its President M Karunanidhi.
The director, famous for his earthy films, called on the DMK chief at party headquarters 'Anna Arivalayam' here and presented a shawl to him. Functionaries of Bhagyaraj fan clubs also joined the party on the occasion, a DMK release here said.
DMK General Secretary K Anbalagan, Deputy General Secretary M K Stalin, Union Ministers Dayanidhi Maran, S S Palanimanickam, party legislator and actor D Napolean were also present, the release added.
Bhagyaraj, who was ordained by the late AIADMK founder MGR as his 'successor in the world of arts' in 1984, launched a political party 'MGR Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam' in 1989.
However, he could not emulate his mentor's success in politics and had to wound up the party within a few months.
