5 highway robbers arrested

Pune, Apr 5 (UNI) The police today arrested five members of a highway robbers gang near Mundhwa here after an exchange of fire where two constables were injured.

Pune police commissioner D N Jadhav told reporters that gang leader Deepak Suryavanshi and four of his accomplices were arrested in the wee hours of this morning. A country-made revolver, live bullets and sharp weapons were recovered from them.

The gang was involved in looting people on highways after forcing their vehicles to halt at gun point.

On receiving information about the gang, a police team had divided into two groups and accosted the gang near Mundhwa. However, sighting the police, the robbers opened fire in which two constables were injured. The police also retaliated in which Suyavanshi was injured. He, along with four others were arrested.

However, five others escaped on motorcycles, Mr Jadhav said.
