This generation target is part of the MoU signed by the company with the Power Ministry. This is the first time that the company has signed an MoU, a THDC release said.

As per the MoU, THDC would also start work on the 1,000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Project, 2400 MW Tehri Power Complex and 444 MW Vishnugad project during this financial year.

THDC plans to contribute 1840 MW in hydro power sector in the 11th plan (2007-12).

Two units of 250 MW each of the Tehri Stage-I (1000 MW) were successfully rolled during the late night of 31st March-06.

The 1000 MW Tehri Stage-I is a part of the 2400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex comprising the 1000 MW Tehri Stage-I, 400 MW Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project which is also under implementation and 1000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (Tehri PSP) which is to be taken up for implementation shortly.

The 1000 MW Tehri Stage-I comprises a 260.5 m high Tehri Dam, which is the highest Earth&Rockfill Dam in the Asian Region, 4 nos. Head Race Tunnels (2 nos. for Tehri Stage-I and 2 nos. for Tehri PSP), an underground Hydro Power House having four conventional Turbine / Generator sets of 250 MW each and a complex Spillway System comprising Chute Spillway, 2 gated Shaft Spillways and 2 ungated Shaft Spillways.

The Intermediate Outlet Level (ILO) shall enable water releases for irrigation purposes, when the machines are not in operation.

The Tehri Stage-I will afford 1000 MW of peaking power to the Northern Grid, with annual generation of 3568 MU. The State of Uttaranchal will be entitled to 12% free power from the project.

Regulated discharges from Tehri Reservoir, will also enable augmentation of generation in downstream Projects of the State Govt.

to the tune of 200 MU annually.

The Project is also designed to provide irrigation benefits in 2.7 lac. ha., apart from stabilization of 6.04 lac. ha. in U.P, as also drinking water benefits to Delhi (300 cusecs) to cater to a population of 40 lacs and to U.P (200 cusecs).
