NMPT to celebrate National Maritime Day tomorrow

Mangalore, Apr 4: The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) in Karnatka will celebrate the 43rd 'National Maritime Day' at Panambur on the outskirts of the city tomorrow.

The main objective of the celebration is to enable the public to know more about the activities of the Indian shipping industry and the important role it played in the economy of the country, Capt K Vaswani, Deputy Conservator, NMPT, told reporters here yesterday.

The Day would also be observed as 'Merchant Navy Week', he said, adding that active participation was sought from the ship owners, shipbuilders, shippers, Port authorities and seafarers.

The public would be allowed to see the ships at the Port on onf the celebration day, he added.

It was on April five, 1919 that the first Indian steamship 'loyalty' ventured into international waters on a voyage from Mumbai to UK National maritime, he informed.

The day is also celebrated by several important maritime countries like USA, Japan and Germany, he added.
