National meet on work place safety from tomorrow

New Delhi, Apr 4 (UNI) About 750 delegates from trade unions, governments, industry and professional bodies will take part in a three-day national conference on safety, health and environment at work place beginning here tomorrow.

Minister of State for Labour, Chandra Sekhar Sahu, will inaugurate the conference where delegates from home and abroad will share the best national and international practices.

Organised by the National Safety Council, the conference will see presentations by Johnson and Johnson on safety and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and National Thermal Power Corporation on accident-free work place.

International Labour Organisation (ILO) will present its global strategy on occupational safety and health, said a Labour Ministry official.

Over two million workers die every year across the world from work-related diseases and the figure is on the rise. The challenge is bigger in India as more than 90 per cent of its workforce is in the unorganised sectors like agriculture and construction. These workers are not covered under any safety programmes.
