Flextronics, SemIndia announce strategic partnership
New Delhi, Apr 4 (UNI) Singapore-based Flextronics today announced a strategic deal with SemIndia to manufacture electronic products like cell phones, set-top boxes and personal computers at a manufacturing unit in Chennai.
''Chips from SemIndia will be used by Flextronics to make electronic products like cell phones, set-top boxes and personal computers at a manufacturing unit in Chennai,'' Flextronics Asia President and MD Peter Tan told reporters here while adding that, ''We should be ready for roll-out by July 31.'' Mr Tan, while informing that the Electronics Manufacturing Services company will also buy a minority stake in SemIndia, refused to disclose the amount of investment.
''I cannot share the numbers with you as yet as our results will be out this month,'' he said.
When asked why they chose India, Mr Tan replied, ''This partnership comes with the vision of creating India's first world class wafer fabrication unit.'' The SemIndia project will also include chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices, the Government of India and Government of Andhra Pradesh and the India Semiconductor Association.
The total Indian electronic market will be around 250 billion dollars by 2015.
