Advani statement on UPA was sign of BJP's depression:Varadarajan

Gulbarga, Apr 4: Communist Party of India(Marxist) Polit Bureau member K Varadarajan said the statement by Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha L K Advani that the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) will disintegrate after the Assembly elections in five states was a sign of depression.

Speaking after inaugurating party's State Convention here last night, he said that the results of the Assembly polls will further strengthen anti-communal forces in the country.

The BJP leader said ''the BJP has no chance of putting up a good show in any of the five states going to the polls next month. The constituents of the UPA and its supporting parties are all set to romp home in all the states.'' ''The fight is between the Left Parties and the Congress in Kerala and West Bengal, the Regional parties will fight for supremacy in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, the BJP is no where in the picture in any of these states. In Assam also BJP chances are very limited'', he added.

Mr Varadarajan came down heavily on former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President H D Deve Gowda for his stand on his son H D Kumaraswamy joining hands with the BJP to form a coalition government in Karnakata. '' Mr Gowda compromised his secular principles by defending his son who aligned with communal forces.

Mr Gowda has forgotten how he become Prime Minister with the help of left parties on the principles of protecting secular policy, he added.

Mr Varadarajan alleged that even after more than five decades of country's independence people belonging to Dalit community were denied of basic rights and untouchability continued. He said that according to a survey conducted by the CPI(M) untouchability prevailed in more than 70 per cent of the villages in Tamil Nadu. Dalits were denied entry into temples and in many villages they were not allowed to wear their sandals while crossing the land belonging to upper caste. They were also prevented from using common water sources. The Political parties and a few Dalit leaders are using the community as a vote bank, he alleged.

Mr Varadarajan also alleged that BJP and the Sangh Parivar have cashed in on the situation in some of the tribal belts in North India. They have worked towards ensuring them basic rights and fought against the injustice and atrocities meted out to them. They have roped in the support of tribal youth by giving them a distorted version on conversions made by the Christian missionaries.
