Open varsities no way inferior to regular ones, says WB Governor

Mysore, Apr 3 (UNI) West Bengal Governor Gopalakrishna Gandhi today observed that open universities were in no way inferior to the regular ones in the country.

Delivering his address at the sixth convocation of the Karnataka State Open University here, he called upon open varsities to maintain high quality of education on par with regular universities.

Open universities provided social justice by giving an opportunity to those deprived of regular education to pursue their studies.

In all there were 12 open varsities in the country, catering to the educational needs of thousands of people, he pointed out.

Referring to the Centre's rural employment guarantee scheme, Mr Gandhi said the scheme had become popular in the country and required further publicity. In several states farmers, those who owned five-ten acres of land, were eager to enroll their names under the scheme.

Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi presented gold medals to meritorious students.
