New Delhi, Apr 3 (UNI) Nearly 68 per cent polling was recorded in the first phase of assembly elections to 65 seats in Asom, the Election Commission said today.

''The polling was by and large peaceful,'' said deputy election commissioner R. Bhattacharya.

He said there was one incident of miscreants entering a polling station in Chabua assembly of Dibrugarh district and destroying an electronic voting machine.

Any decision on repolling will be taken after observers submit their report, said Mr Bhattacharya.

A total of 65 constituencies went to polls with 92.75 lakh streaming 9,723 polling stations and 50,000 personnel involved. The EC had deputed 51 observers to supervise central and state security forces.

The remaining 61 constituencies would go to the polls in the second phase on April 10.
