Varsities fail to provide extention education and research: Patil
Ranchi, Apr 2 (UNI) Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said that Indian universities have failed to deliver in the field of research and development and extending education.
Addressing the 22nd Convocation ceremony of Ranchi university here, Mr Patil said that the varsities had three primary objectives of imparting education, extending training to the poor and research and development.
''While 300-odd universities in the country are performing satisfactorily, I feel they have failed to deliver in extending education and research. The universities should spend more time and money in these areas,'' he said.
Mr Patil said the country must have more universities to meet the need. The universities should be truly universal nature rising above regionality and imparting global standard education.
He also emphasised the need for women's education, key factor for in any prosperous society.
The ceremony was also addressed by Governor Syed Sibte Razi, Chief Minister Arjun Munda and Human Resource Development Minister of the state Pradeep Yadav.
