Rs 100.22 crore worth tax evasion unearthed

Bangalore, Apr 2 (UNI) The Bangalore zonal unit of the Central Excise Intelligence has unearthed central excise duty and service tax evasion to the tune of over Rs 100.22 crore for 2005-06.

In a release here today, its Additional Director General Somesh Arora said the enforcement cell, having jurisdiction over Kerala, Karnataka and Goa, had unearthed evasion of Central Excise duty to the extent of Rs 51.84 crore in 15 cases and evasion of Service Tax worth Rs 48.38 crore in 63 cases.

He said an amount of Rs 32.15 crore had been realised out of the said detections, which was Rs 26.12 crore more compared to the corresponding previous period and surpassed all records of the zonal unit in terms of evasion detection and recovery.

The Directorate had targetted evasion-prone commodities such as iron and steel, plywood, computer hardware, helmets, gutkha and plastic articles for evasion of central excise duty, besides evasion of service tax by air travel agents, consulting engineers, technical testing and analysis maintenance and repair, intellectual property services, business auxiliary services and commisisoning and installation services.

A majority of the cases were booked on the basis of overt intelligence and suspect profiling developed by the Directorate and 11 cases were booked on covert information provided by informers.
