Public hearing of Tipaimukh dam soon

Imphal, Apr 2 (UNI) Public hearing of the Tipaimukh hydro-electric project in Manipur will be done soon, North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) Deputy General Manager (Electricals) P H Ibomcha said today.

Speaking to the media on the 30th Raising Day of NEEPCO here, Ibomcha said Tipaimukh would be one of the biggest projects undertaken by the Corporation and would generate about 1500 MW of power.

The Tipaimukh dam has been facing stiff opposition in the state and from Bangladesh as the Barak river, where the dam would be constructed, flows through Manipur, Mizoram and Bangladesh.

About 295 sq km of land, including portions of Mizoram, would be submerged under water after the project was completed, he said.

Anti-dam activitists have also planned a rally in Imphal tomorrow to oppose the construction of the dam.

Ibomcha said international tender for the dam was invited and three companies from China, Japan and Iran and seven Indian companies had applied.

He further said the Public Investment Board of had approved Rs 6000 crore project but sanction from the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs was awaited.
