Five "bag lifters" of Sri Lankan origin arrested

New Delhi, Apr 2 (UNI) The Delhi Police today busted a gang involved in nearly 82 cases of "bag lifting" from various parts of the capital and Noida in the last few months with the arrest of five of its members, who hailed from Sri Lanka.

The five were arrested yesterday afternoon from the Madangir area of South Delhi while they were planning to commit another dacoity in Kalkaji.

The police recovered from them Rs 96000 besides stolen jewellery articles worth Rs four lakh, a video camera, one TSR and one Maruti Van.

During investigation, it was revealed that the five accused were Lankan citizens, who had migrated to Tamil Nadu in 1977 during the disturbances in the island nation. They later shifted to the Madangir area in 1978.

Police said the five had been involved in incidents of thefts of bags containing cash and laptops in various areas of Delhi.

They would dispose of the laptops to a few notorious receivers in Inderpuri and several other areas of the capital. Efforts are on to arrest these people, police added.
