Fire engulfs car scrapyard, major tragedy averted
Panaji, April 2 (UNI) Timely action by fire tenders saved several brand new vehicles from being gutted in a fire which broke out in the scrapyard behind a car showroom in Verna Industrial Estate of South Goa this afternoon.
Margao fire station officer Babani Volvoikar said about four old cars, scrap and tyres, and old spares were destroyed in flames that had spread from dry grass in the open yard.
Prompt action by an assistant fire officer passing by had prevented further spread of the fire to about 100 new vehicles parked in the open in the vicinity.
The showroom authorities claimed loss of property worth Rs 15 lakhs, according to the officer.
