EC orders inquiry against Mahajan for violating code of conduct

Guwahati, Apr 2 (UNI) The Election Commission today ordered an inquiry against BJP secretary Pramod Mahajan for violating the model code of conduct.

Mr Mahajan, the party in-charge for Asom, addressed a press conference here and the EC termed it a violation of code of conduct since campaigning for the first phase of the polls ended yesterday.

''The incident is a serious violation of EC model code of conduct,'' state CEO J B Prakash told mediapersons here, adding the District Magistrate had been undertake an inquiry and submit a report for further action.

The EC has also directed the DM to file a case against Mr Mahajan.

Polling for the first phase will take place tomorrow and the areas include the capital where Mr Mahajan held his press conference.

The EC's action followed after it receiving a complaint in this regard.

Meanwhile, Mr Prakash informed that 359 companies of police were being used in the first phase, of which 285 were deployed at polling stations.
