Administration to encourage foreign tourists in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, Apr 2 (UNI) As a part of a campaign launched by the Chandigarh administration for the promotion of tourism, concerted efforts were being made for the promotion of international tourism by encouraging and facilitating foreign visitors, an official spokesperson said here today.
Among the various steps taken in this direction includes providing tourists from Germany and France with literature in their language.
In an effort to attract both domestic and foreign tourists, the Tourism department has recorded considerable increase in the number of domestic and foreign tourists. The number of tourist arrivals in 2004 were 60,6333 (domestic) and 17,133 (foreigners) and in 2005 the figures were 61,4176 (domestic) and 23,294 from abroad.
It had been decided by the administration to celebrate the 'Chandigarh New Year Festival' in a big way, starting from this year, the spokesperson said adding that the celebrations would be held in Chandigarh every year from December 25 to January 1.
The government and private buildings would be illuminated, musical performances, shopping festivals, firework displays, discounts at hotels and restaurants and other linked initiatives would be part of the celebrations.
The New Year festival would be publicised in a big way to attract large number of tourists to come to Chandigarh. Private participation in the New Year Festival would be encouraged through various associations and organisations.
It has also been decided by the administration that the important buildings in the city would also be illuminated on the Independence Day and the Republic Day every year, he added.
