Pondicherry, Apr 1 (UNI) Tension prevailed at the Kamaraj square here as two groups of AIADMK workers waiting for the arrival of party supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa almost came to blows.

Police said Kamaraj square was a centre for Ms Jayalalithaa to address the people. The party had earlier announced Mr Nehru as the candidate for Orleanpet but later replaced him with actor Anandaraj.

Mr Nehru and Anandaraj, with their respective supporters, assembled at the Kamaraj square and were waiting for the arrival of Ms Jayalalithaa, when their supporters came to the verge of a clash.

The policemen tried to restore order by pacifying the warring groups, but when it yielded no results, they had to resort to mild force to seperate the groups by asking them to stay on different sides.

The supporters of Mr Nehru were holding placards, demanding a change in the candidate for Orleanpet.

At the arrival of Ms Jayalalithaa at the Kamaraj square, the supporters of Mr Nehru shouted slogans, demanding that the candidate for Orleanpet be changed.

The Chief Minister, however, without listening to the slogans, began her speech and urged the people to vote for Mr Anandaraj and left for the next venue.
