Another highway blockade begins, medical supplies low

Imphal, Apr 1 (UNI) Economic blockade has started on National Highway 39 last midnight with emergency medical supplies to the state running low.

The hospital authorities have announced here that the required medical supplies for operation, oxygen and life-saving drugs were reduced due to this blockade.

The ZSU and KSO started the economic blockade demanding repair of Imphal Tamenglong (IT) road and demanded developmental works at Tamei and Sadar hills sub-division of Manipur.

The Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has expressed unhappiness over the blockade and mentioned the highway would be soon repaired.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Prof Y Mohen said the medical requirements for the hospital would be exhausted within a week's time and appealed to allow free movement of medical goods.

The All Tribal Students' Association of Manipur (ATSUM) had called off a six-day-long economic blockade yesterday and while another blockade on the NH was announced by Zeliangrong Students' Union (ZSU) and Kuki Students Organisations (KSO).

The ATSUM had agreed to call off the stir after the government agreed to engage teachers on contract basis and formulate new reservation policy within three months for the students.
