200 held for trying to hold rally

Visakhapatnam, Apr 1 (UNI) More than 200 people were arrested here today when they tried to hold a rally in the city in protest against the firing incident in Gangavaram village a week ago and demanding the immediate stopping of construction work on port. Police said fishermen from Gangavaram and surrounding villages planned to take out a massive rally from Asilmetta Junction to Collectorate when they were arrested at various points in the city.

However, the agitators succeeded in taking out a rally from Gangavaram to the old Gazuwaka Junction where they held a meeting.

A number of resolutions were passed during the meeting which was attended by CITU State Secretary Ch Narasinga Rao among others.

The fishermen were released later.

One person was killed and several injured when police opened fire to control the agitating fishermen who went berserk demanding proper relief and rehabilitation package for them as compensation for land acquired for construction of the port.
