Thinker, tactician and mass leader Bose new CPI(M) State Secretary

Kolkata, Mar 31 (UNI) A spartan in lifestyle, a political thinker and staunchest believer in Marxism, 65 year-old bachelor Biman Bose today took over as CPI(M) State Secretary.

He succeeds Mr Anil Biswas, who died on March 26 following a cerebral attack.

A Promode Dasgupta protege, Mr Bose will also continue as the Left Front Committee Chairman, a post he holds from 2001.

Born on July one, 1940, he joined political and social activities from the school days and participated in his first election campaign during an assembly by-elections in 1954.

Though recommended for party in 1957, he was granted membership in 1958 as he was a minor till then.

He joined the movement against Bengal-Bihar merger in 1956, was imprisoned in 1958 and came out to join the Food Movement in 1959.

He became Secretary of Bengal Priovincial Students' Federation (BPSF), Kolkata District, and Vice-President of BPSF in 1964.

He worked as assistant secretary of Indo-Vietnam Solidarity Committee in Mid-60s. He became the first All India Secretary of Students' Federation of India in 1970 and a member CPI(M) state committe in 1971. He became a secretariat member in 1978.

A permanent invitee in CPI(M) Central Committee from 1983, Bose was appointed a member of Central Committee in 1985 and polit bureau in 1998.

An able successor to Anil Biswas, he is also an expert in political tightrope walking with an uncanny ability to carry with him the opinion of the varied and diverse.

Dressed in while like his political icon Pramode Dasgupta, he has a meal a day and lives at the party office which is his home.
