MADRID, Mar 30 (Reuters) Villarreal remain hopeful of a place in the Champions League semi-final despite losing their first match in the competition yesterday.

The Spanish side went down 2-1 at Inter Milan in the San Siro but will relish the return at El Madrigal on Tuesday.

''We are happy because the team played a serious game and it gives us cause for optimism,'' said midfielder Javi Calleja.

''They had some clear chances, but we reacted well and we might have drawn the game.'' Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan gave the Spaniards a dream start when he put them ahead after 45 seconds, but they were unable to withstand Inter's powerful reaction and the Serie A side drew level six minutes later when Adriano pounced after a an error in the Villarreal defence.

Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins made it 2-1 early in the second half and the Italians were on top for the rest of the match, although Villarreal gave them a scare when playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme hit the bar with a free kick and had a late penalty appeal turned down.

''It may be a defeat, but it's one that leaves us with hope,'' said skipper Quique Alvarez. ''They are a great team, but we had the chance to equalise at the end.

''In Europe referees are very different to those in the Spanish league and it is difficult to get a penalty when you play away from home.'' The winners of the tie will play either Arsenal or Juventus in the semi-finals. Arsenal won the first leg 2-0 at home.
