Ugadi celebrated with traditional gaiety

Tirupati, Mar 30 (UNI) Telegu New Year ''Ugadi'' was celebrated with traditional gaiety at this temple town today.

Attired in the new clothes, people celebrated the new year with traditional fervor, greeting near and dear ones. The women woke up in the early hours, put up colours (Kolams) before their houses to mark the auspicious occassion.

Tirupati Urban Development Authority(TUDA) is conducting a cultural programme in this regard.

In the evening, celebrations will begin with 'Ugadi Pachchadi'' followed by ''Annamacharya Saankeerthanas'' and ''Panchangasravanam'' (reading of the almanac).

The classical dance programme ''Parampara'' would be performed by dancer and actress Hemamalini for the first time in the temple town.

In Tirumala, special poojas were performed at Sri Venkateswara temple with ''Ugadi Asthanam''. Malayappaswamy (festival idol) was seated along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi on ''Sarvapala Vahanam'' before the temple, wearing new clothes, Special decorations were made in the ''sanctum sanctorum'' of the temple.

The ''Panchangasravanam'' was conducted in front of the deities.

The deities will be taken out through the four mada streets in the evening.
