Trinamool leader, five others asked to surrender

Kolkata, Mar 30 (UNI) Calcutta High Court today asked Trinamool leader Pankaj Banerjee and five others to surrender before the police in Hoogly district within three weeks in connection with a case that had taken place years ago.

Justice S P Talukdar passed the direction on an appeal filed by Mr Banerjee and the others, seeking dismissal of the criminal charges brought against them by the police at Pursara village in Hoogly district, about five years ago.

A district court had issued arrest warrants against Mr Banerjee and five others but the order could not be implemented.

The court, however, stayed the execution of the arrest warrant till five weeks, when the case would be heard again. Mr Banerjee and others were charged with arson and threatening the police officials of the district during a demonstration five years ago.

Another Trinamool Congress leader Sanjay Bakshi had already got bail from the High Court in the case a few years ago.
