Spanish referees call off strike after pay guarantee

MADRID, Mar 30 (Reuters) Spanish referees called off a strike that threatened this weekend's league matches after football authorities guaranteed immediate payment of overdue salaries, the Spanish Football Federation said today.

The referees said on Monday they would strike if they were not paid their outstanding salaries for the last two months.

The Football League (LFP) and the federation, involved in a long-running power struggle for the control of Spanish football, blamed each other for the situation.

The dispute was eventually solved when the LFP agreed to pay the referees via the federation.

This weekend's games include the eagerly awaited clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
