Panic in Srinagar due to bursting of crackers

Srinagar, Mar 30 (UNI) Police personnel in the civil lines area of the city were on their toes after loud explosion created panic this afternoon.

People, mostly women and children, were seen running in panic after loud explosions were heard in the Exchange Road, Moulana Azad Road, Barbar Shah and women's college road this afternoon.

Police personnel were seen rushing towards different directions to assertain the cause of the explosions.

However, after about 20 minutes, police finally came to know that explosions were caused by craker brusting by the National Conference workers who were celebrating the re-election of Ghulam Mustafa Bhat as Mayor of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).

An officer from police station Kothibagh was heard saying to people that it was just bursting of crakers.

Mr Bhat was elected Mayor of the SMC yesterday.

Meanwhile, police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) intensified searching of vehicles and frisking of pedestrain in the city.

All the vehicles coming from outskirts were being searched thoroughly by the security forces at different places. The passengers were also being frisked following intelligence inputs that militants may cause disturbances.

We have instruction to be alert and conduct joint searches of vehicles, a Jammu and Kashmir police personnal said at Rambagh bridge.
