Cong complains of inflammatory statements to EC

New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) A Congress delegtion met the Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon here today and submitted to him a memorandum alleging inflammatory statements made by some political leaders during campaigning for Asom Assembly elections.

''It is brought to our notice that some political leaders are making inflammatory statements which may create hatred and communal feelings between various voters of the State,'' the Congress' memorandum said.

This (inflammatory statements) violate model code of conduct, the memorandum said, and demanded action to be taken against those indulging in such activities.

The memorandum reportedly referred to a statement allegedly made by a BJP leader that Asom Minister Tarun Gogoi was seeking to create a Muslim state by bringing the IMDT through the back door.

The delegation, which included senior Congress leader and permanent invitee to the CWC Oscar Fernandes and AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, told the Election Commission that the issue regarding identity card had created some confusion among the middle and labour class people, preventing them from voting in the elections. ''Clear instructions may kindly be given to all concerned regarding the domcuments to be relied upon,'' the memorandum said.

The delegation pointed out that in some of the constituencies in Asom, the Observers had not clearly understood the directions of the Election Commission, leading to a lot of confusion regarding the guidelines issued by the EC.
