New Delhi, Mar 29 (UNI) Former Prime Minister V P Singh was today 'detained' for a short while near his residence on Teen Murti Marg while he was leaving to meet jhuggi-jhopri dwellers, whose hutments were being demolished, in Nizamuddin area of South Delhi this evening.
Calling it a travesty of democracy, Mr Singh told UNI that it was unheard of to prevent any person from going anywhere he wanted in a democratic society.
where one wants.
''Despite an assurance by Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken that nothing of this sort would happen demolition of jhuggis have taken place which is surprising and shocking,'' he said.
Mr Singh also said he was told by the police officer that his presence at the 'spot' would create a law and order problem adding that when he asked for the order of his 'detention' the officer refused to comply.
He was, however, allowed to leave after some time when he refused to go back to his residence, the former PM added.
