Rice, flour, other items exempted from VAT for one year

Ranchi, Mar 29 (UNI) Rice, flour and some other essential items will be kept out of Value Added Tax regime in Jharkhand for one year from April one, the date of implementation of VAT in the state.

Addressing a press conference here today, Finance, Commercial Tax and Urban Development Minister Raghubar Das said that bangles, vermilion, incense sticks would also be exempted from VAT for one year. ''During the period, all the exempted items would be taxed as per old system,'' he said.

Mr Das said the Commercial Tax Department would depute a nodal officer in each of the 28 commercial tax zones of the state to clear doubts of the people.

''VAT is pro poor. The suggestions received by us from various quarters for amendments in the present regime have been handed over to the Reforms Committee,'' he added.
