President, PM greet people on festive occasion

New Delhi, Mar 29: President APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have greeted the nation on the eve of the festive occasions of Vikram Samvatsar, Chaitra Sukladi, Gudi Padava, Ugadi, Cheti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraaba, saying these festivals heralding the New Year reflect the ''hopes and aspirations of our people''.

''These traditional New Year festivals represent the multi-hued cultural heritage of our country and are linked together by their message of celebrating and starting the New Year with a vision for prosperity,'' Dr Kalam, in a message, said today.

Dr Singh said these festivals ''provide an opportunity for each of us to make a firm resolve to overcome temporary setbacks, consolidate the gains of the past and forge ahead in the nation's march towards progress.'' The Prime Minister said India's glorious and timeless traditions and its vibrant spirit found their full manifestation in these festivals.

In his message, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, wished happiness, peace and prosperity for all the people of our country on the occasion of New Year, he added. "While celebrating these festivals, let us also remember the poor and the downtrodden and do our utmost to bring happiness in their lives."
