Polling for Rajya Sabha on in Bihar

Patna, Mar 29 (UNI) Polling for the crucial biennial elections to six Rajya Sabha seats is on in Bihar amid tight security today.

Leader of opposition in Bihar assembly and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi was among the prominent members to exercise their franchise in the opening hours.

Polling started at 0900 hrs and will continue till 1600 hrs.

Counting of votes would be taken up after that.

For the six seats of Rajya Sabha, JD(U) is contesting in three seats, RJD in two, followed by BJP and LJP in one seat each.

JD(U) has fielded outgoing Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Prasad and former MLC Mahendra Sahni while president of the AIl India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaj is another candidate of the party.

RJD has fielded Chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council Professor Jabir Hussain and an advocate Rajniti Prasad.

Former Rajya Sabha member Dr Ranjan Prasad Yadav is the lone candidate of LJP while former union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has been fielded by the BJP.

In the 243 member assembly, JD(U) has 88 members, BJP(55), RJD(54), LJP(10), Congress(9), CPI(ML)(5), BSP(4), CPI(3), SP(2), CPI(M)(1), NCP(1), Independents(10) and one seat is vacant.
