Govt orders enquiry into Kakopathar relief letter issue

Guwahati, Mar 29 (UNI) The Asom government today ordered an enquiry into the issue of a copy of a cancelled order to media and political party over payment of compensation to Kakopathar victims' families.

In a release, the government clarified that the decision to pay the one-time compensation to victims' families of Kakopathar police firing incident of February 10 was taken at a Cabinet meeting on February 27.

However, with the declaration of Assembly election schedule on March 1, the matter was referred to the state Chief Electoral Officer. The order to the Tinsukia District Commissioner on March 27 to pay the compensation was issued after receiving the necessary clearance from the election department a day before, the release said.

The matter of referring the guilty of the firing incident as "extremists" in the official order was pointed out before the order was dispatched and it was sent only after rectification, the release added.

The senior administration assistant, who had drafted the order, had been suspended with immediate effect.
