Container lorry workers stir hits traffic at Cochin Port
Kochi, Mar 29 (UNI) Expressing concern over the indefinite strike by container lorry workers here, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry today said cargo movement from the container terminal of Cochin Port had come to a standstill because of the three-day-old stir.
In a statement here, Chamber President Balagopala B Pai said the strike had hit exim trade and cargo traffic through Cochin Port.
'As barely three days are left for the close of the current financial year, if this strike is allowed to continue, it will also cause financial strain to the exporting community due to non-fulfilment of export commitments on time,' he said.
Mr Pai said when Cochin Port was poised for tremendous growth, any move hampering smooth flow of cargo should be avoided. An atmosphere of mutual understanding and cooperation was needed for the overall development of the prestigious port, the only major one in Kerala.
The Chamber requested the Cochin Port Trust Chairman to take immediate steps to ensure normalcy was restored at the earliest.
