V P Singh protests UPA's policy towards slum dwellers
New Delhi, Mar 27 (UNI) Former Prime Minister V P Singh sat on protest dharna here today against the Congress-led UPA Government's policy towards slum dwellers.
According to a spokesman for the Jan Chetna Manch, the former PM sat on dharna shortly after police used water canons and tear gas shells to control hundreds of his supporters assembled outside Parliament Street police station.
Nearly a dozen protestors were injured and were taken to hospitals due to the police action, he said.
Earlier, addressing the protest meeting, Mr Singh charged the UPA Government with failure in fulfilling its pre-electoral promise to provide shelters and jobs for urban poor and protect them from municipal bulldozers.
Demanding that the Government accord highest priority to providing public shelters and livelihood options for the poor, the JCM has also been campaigning for enactment of a Slum Act.
