SP wins Kauriram assembly seat in UP
Gorakhpur, Mar 27 (UNI) Samajwadi Party candidate Ram Bhuwal Nishad today won the Kauriram assembly seat defeating his nearest BJP rival Sheetal Pandey by 10,629 votes.
Mr Nishad and Mr Pandey polled 52,267 and 41,638 votes respectively.
Independent candidate Upendra Shukla polled 17,635 votes and finished third in the contest.
The bypoll was necessitated after the membership of Nishad (then a BSP MLA) was terminated by the Supreme Court.
Kauriram is in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
The bypoll -- which was not contested by the BSP this time -- took place on March 25.
There were a total of seven candidates in the fray including Congress' Shiv Shambhu Nishad.
