Supreme Court notice to Centre on child marriage

New Delhi, Mar 27: The Supreme Court today (Mar 27, 2006) issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi administration on a petition filed by National Commission for Women seeking to fix the minimum age for marriage in order to check child marriages.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justice C K Thakkar and Justice R V Ravindran issued the notices after hearing the counsel for the petitioner. The court also stayed the operation of High Court order declaring the marriage of a 16-year-old girl as valid.

The court shall consider the entire gamut of the controversy involving the prevalent customs and traditions of marrying off teenagers throughout the country.
