PT releases first list of candidates

Written by: Staff

Madurai, Mar 27 (UNI) The Puthiya Thamizhagam (PT) today released the first list of 27 candidates for the coming Assembly elections.

Releasing the list before mediapersons here, PT President Krishnasamy reiterated the party's resolve to contest in 150 seats to consolidate the more than 25 per cent Dalit votes with the slogan 'Dalit Prime Minister and Dalit Chief Minister'.

The party could not find a berth in either of the fronts led by the DMK and the AIADMK. But, ruling out any association with the BJP, the PT leader said efforts were on to bring in as many Dalit organisations and outfits under one umbrella to fight the elections on a single symbol.

This would facilitate each organisation to retain their distinct identity and help carry forward the struggle of the underprivileged towards political empowerment, he added.

Stating the election manifesto of the party, being given final touches, would be released next week, he said the injustice done to the party, especially the denial of democratic activities like holding public meetings and conferences, would be highlighted in the campaign.

Urging the Election Commission (EC) to relax the restriction imposed on campaign timings, considering the harvest season and the summer, he said canvassing in rural areas and small towns was possible only in the evening.

Alleging large scale deletion of eligible voters, especially Dalits, in many areas specifically in Tuticorin district, he said despite the EC extending the date for inclusions till April 6, local officials were feigning ignorance.

It amounted to usurping their rights and demanded stern action against the officials.

To a question, he said election campaign by film stars was a continuation of a debased political culture for over half a century, which has ruined the state.

The list of candidates released was for the following districts -- Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul, Tirchirapalli, Pudukottai and Tiruvarur.
