Bangalore, Mar 27 (UNI) Infinera today announced successful completion of a lab demonstration of a large scale photonic integrated circuit (PIC) capable of carrying data at a rate of 1.6 terabits per second.

This was the highest data rate yet achieved for a single PIC, the company said in a release here, adding that last year the company had demonstrated a PIC capable of carrying data at 400 gigabits per second.

At 1.6 terabits per second, a single chip would be capable of transmitting simultaneously more than 50 million internet telephone calls or 1,60,000 hih definition television broadcasts. Infinera's 1.6 terabit per second PIC included more than 240 optical devices on a chip and could transmit 40 channels of optical data with each channel operating at 40 gigabits per second. An optical system based on a 1.6 terabit per second PIC would deliver substantial benefits to service providers in terms of density, space, power consumption and cost effectiveness, the release said.
