HC declares permissible sound levels in response to petition

Mumbai, Mar 27 (UNI) The Bombay High Court, in response to a writ petition, today declared the permissible levels of noise in the zones classified.

A division bench, comprising justices D G Deshpande and Ms V K Tahilramani, declared the noise levels in response to a petition by a group who had been denied permission by the Mumbai police commissioner from organising a ''kavi sammelan'' at Kalbadevi here since the venue was located in a ''silence zone''.

As per the directions, Zone 'A', marked as industrial zone, is permitted 75 decibels during the day time and 70 decibels during the night. Zone 'B', marked as commercial zone, is allowed 65 db during day time and 55 db at night, Zone 'C', marked as residential zone, is permitted 55 db in the day and 45 db during the night time, while Zone 'D', classified as silence zone, is allowed 50 db in the day and 40 db during night.

The court also classified day time as between 0600 hours to 2000 hours and vice versa as night.

The High Court disallowed the petitioners from holding their programme since it was proposed to be organised within 100 metres of religious places and educational institutions.
