Five drown in Cauvery

Chennai, Mar 27 (UNI) Five people, including a three-year-old girl, drowned in River Cauvery at Hogenekal in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu this evening.

According to reports received at the police headquarters here, the victims, hailing from Bangalore, went for a bath in the falls when the mishap occurred.

Ironically they were here to attend the funeral of a relative at Anjupatti Village, near Hogenekal and went for a headbath at the falls after the ceremony.

Police said while one of the victims was washed away, others drowned in a bid to save him.

The victims were identified as Mangalammal (27), Rajeshwari (27), Paplu (3), Sumathi (16) and Kamala (17).

Efforts are on to recover the bodies, police said.
