Upgradation of Assam Rifles into armed force opposed
Imphal, Mar 26 (UNI) The Centre for Organisation and Education (CORE) today strongly opposed the move to make the Assam Rifles an armed force.
The CORE in a statement here said, " The Assam Rifles is widely unpopular in the state due to the largescale killings, rape and other forms of activities. " It gave a lengthy list of killings, criminal assaults, including that of Th Manorama, which evoked massive protest in the state in 2004. The CORE said the Assam Rifles was basically established by the Britishers in mid-1830s to man the border areas.
There already are 50,000 Assam Rifles personnel, and making it an armed force will further provide them with more impunity as there would be no redressal mechanism, it further said.
Under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFPSA), the security personnel are empowered to kill anybody on mere suspicion in Manipur and none is allowed to seek judicial redressal. The centralisation and militarisation of all forms of administration in the state will cause more crisis in the region, it alleged.
It urged the Centre not to usurp democracy in the region.
