Mumbai, Mar 26: Republican Party of India (A) president Ramdas Athawale today urged party workers to strengthen the party base and embrace weaker sections of the society.

Speaking after inaugurating a two-day convention of the party here today, Mr Athawale said the party should take up the cause of the weaker sections and should endeavour to make it broad-based.

Taking a dig at the Shiv Sena, he said those who renamed Mumbai airport and VT Railway station after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and who renamed Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar, should not criticise the renaming of Marathwada University after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

As many as 20 resolutions were passed on the first day of the convention pertaining to the political situation in the state and the country, an RPI (A) release said here today.

Over 5,000 party workers from across the state are attending the convention.
