COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Mar 26 (Reuters) The first morning of the opening test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan was washed out today after heavy rains in the capital city.

The unseasonal downpours started just after dawn and were so heavy that the vast majority of the Sinhalese Sports Club was covered in standing water by mid-morning.

The prospects of play remain bleak and the umpires are expected to abandon the first day shortly after a post-lunch inspection.

The players of both teams remained at the team hotel throughout the morning.

The second and final test starts on April 3 in Kandy.
