NCP candidate held after clearing scrutiny
Diphu, Mar 26 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dewan Rongpi, a party candidate for coming Asom assembly election from Bokajan, was arrested yesterday against a non-bailable warrant (NBW) in a dacoity case.
The warrant was issued by a local court on the basis of a report filed by Diphu police station officer in-charge.
He was today remanded to police custody for two days by a Judicial Magistrate.
Mr Rongpi was suspected to be absconding in a dacoity case since 1996.
His nomination had already been cleared after scrutiny by the Election Commission.
According to an EC directive any person against whom a non-bailable warrant is pending cannot contest the polls.
Mr Rongpi pointed out that he had earlier contested the Assembly election and the autonomous council polls and his nominations had been cleared.
