AP to be role model in NREG Scheme: AP CM

Hyderabad, Mar 26 (UNI) The Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today took stock of the progress on the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), which aimed to provide economic relief to lakhs of farmers, who are victims of seasonal vagaries.

Dr Reddy, directed the officials of the department of Rural Development to ensure that necessary arrangements were made at the village level to build confidence in the farming community to postpone their visits to towns in the summer months in search of livelihood.

He exhorted the officials to effectively and efficiently implement NREGS, which guaranteed 100 days of wage employment to small farmers and the rural poor.

The Chief Minister said Andhra Pradesh had been chosen by the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make AP as a role model to launch the scheme on February first, in view of the leadership the state had shown in ushering pro-farmer initiatives in the last two years.
