'Sonia resigned facing disqualification'
Vijayawada, Mar 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (Mar 25, 2006) said Sonia Gandhi had resigned from the Lok Sabha knowing that she would be disqualified by the Election Commission under Article 102 (1) of the Constitution.
BJP state Chief Indrasena Reddy charged Congress leaders with giving 'wide publicity' and portraying her act as a sacrifice.
Criticising TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu for saying his party leaders had brought the issue to light after Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan was disqualified on the 'office of profit' issue, he said, TDP had only given a letter to President A P J Abdul Kalam and it was the BJP, which objected to Ms Gandhi holding twin posts.
He asked why Mr Naidu had not raised the issue of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee resigning when he was Chairman of the Sriniketan-Shantiniketan Development Corporation.
