Man arrested for strangulating girlfriend

Mumbai, Mar 24 (UNI) Police today arrested a man for murdering his girlfriend almost a fortnight back and absconding after committing the crime.

Investigating Officer Dhanaji Nalavade here said Jayendra Gupta (33) strangulated his girlfriend Rekha Pawar (30) on March 11 in a hotel in the Western suburb of Malad, after the latter threatened her that she would lodge a complaint against him for using her, if he did not marry her.

After killing her, Gupta fled from the spot and left for his native place in Uttar Pradesh.

Mr Nalavade said when the accused could not be traced, they detained his brother from his Vikhroli residence.

Later, Gupta returned to Mumbai, but took shelter at a friend's residence in Vikhroli, from where he was nabbed this morning.

He will be produced in Borivali court tomorrow morning.
