BJP discusses situation after Sonia's resignation
New Delhi, Mar 24: A meeting of top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders started here today (Mar 24, 2006) to discuss the situation arising out of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi's resignation from her membership of the Lok Sabha and presidentship of the National Advisory Council over the 'office of profit' issue.
BJP chief Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha LK Advani and BJP spokesperson Arun Jaitley are among the senior leaders attending the meeting being held at the party headquaters here.
Gandhi's resignation came as the issue of Parliamentarians and legislators holding offices of profit threatened to snowball into a major controversy following disqualification of Samajwadi party Member of the Rajya Sabha Jaya Bachchan on the ground that she was holding an office of profit as chairperosn of the Uttar Pradesh Film Dvelopment Council.
The BJP petitioned President Kalam seeking Ms Gandhi's disqualification from Lok Sabha on the same ground as was applied in the case of Ms Bachchan.
