Bhopal, Mar 24 (UNI) In the wake of the avian influenza virus' presence being confirmed in Maharashtra's Nandurbar district on February 18, 2,717 samples have tested negative till date in Madhya Pradesh.

''Since that date, 3,380 samples were sent from various places in this state to the High-Security Animal Disease Laboratory here,'' Commissioner (Veterinary Services) Rajesh Rajora said today.

A report on 1,757 samples was obtained today while a report on 960 was submitted earlier and one on 663 samples was awaited. A majority of the samples were obtained from districts bordering Maharashtra and Gujarat.

''Swine deaths in some districts have no connection with bird flu though pigs are carriers of the virus. A high alert was sounded in this state after confirmation in Maharashtra,'' the bureaucrat added.
